The dolphins feed in the Menai Bay Conservation Area, a protected zone that extends along the southern and western coastlines, where coral reefs and seagrass beds support rich marine biodiversity. Spinner dolphins, named for their acrobatic leaps, are typically spotted in pods of 20 to 40 individuals during early morning hours when they move closer to shore. Bottlenose dolphins tend to appear in smaller groups and are less reliably seen. While guides know the feeding grounds and travel patterns, these are wild animals—some mornings yield close encounters, others only distant fins. The Menai Bay Conservation Area introduced guidelines in recent years to reduce stress on the pods: boats must maintain distance, engines cut when dolphins approach, and in-water encounters are managed to prevent chasing. Ethical operators brief guests on no-touch rules and limit the number of swimmers entering the water at once.
