Kizimkazi's fishing dhows have shared these waters with spinner dolphins for centuries, but organized encounters began only in the early 1990s when local captains realized the pods returned to the same coastal banks each morning.
The village sits at Zanzibar's southern tip, where the channel between Unguja Island and the open Indian Ocean narrows to less than two kilometers. Spinner dolphins hunt squid and small fish in the thermocline here, rising to the surface in the cooler hours between first light and mid-morning, then disappearing into deeper water as the sun climbs.
